Counter-current jet vs. a lap pool: what pays off
Do you want to swim longer distances at home, but your plot and budget don’t allow building a 15–25 metre lap pool? A counter-current jet is a solution that gets around this problem — instead of lengthening the pool, it creates a flow of water you swim against on the spot.
Investment costs
Building a lap pool long enough for a continuous swimming pace (typically from 12.5 m up) means earthworks, construction, technology and often a building permit — an investment on the order of tens of thousands of euros. A counter-current jet, by contrast, can be added to an existing, even relatively small garden pool for a fraction of that amount, without any need to enlarge or rebuild the pool.
Demands on the plot
A lap pool needs a sufficiently large and level plot. A counter-current jet gets around this requirement entirely — it works even in a pool a few metres in size, because you don’t swim forward, you swim against the current on the spot. That makes it practically the only realistic way to swim at pace in a smaller garden.
Operating costs
A longer lap pool means more water to heat, more surface to keep clean and higher demands on filtration. A small pool with a counter-current jet, on the other hand, stays at the operating-cost level of an ordinary garden pool — the jet itself only adds electricity consumption while you actually swim (more in the article How much does running a counter-current jet cost).
Training quality
In a lap pool you actually swim forward and change position — which has its advantages for turn technique and orientation in the water. A counter-current jet doesn’t address that aspect, but it lets you precisely and smoothly regulate the flow intensity, so training can be tailored to fitness and goal (from gentle recovery to intensive conditioning) in a way you simply cannot replicate in a classic pool.
When each option pays off
If you are building a pool from scratch and have enough space and budget, a lap pool gives a full swimming experience. If you already have a pool, or space and budget don’t allow building a long pool, a counter-current jet brings the possibility of swimming training and recreational swimming for a fraction of the cost and without construction work — installation takes a matter of minutes, as described on the Installation page.
